Vacancy of Pastor’s Post in the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Bellville, Cape Town (Kreuzkirche Bellville)

– part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa

We invite applications for the position of pastor to our congregation, which will be vacant from 1st April 2017.
The congregation was founded over 100 years ago in the heart of Bellville. The church building itself was only built 50 years ago. At that time many immigrants from Germany (after World War II) joined the congregation, which made it necessary to build a church. In time a German Kindergarten was added next door and the German seniors’ home St. Johannis Heim nearby.

Services in our church are presently held in German, Afrikaans and English. We are a vibrant, but “old” congregation, with most of our active members being pensioners. After fifty years the surround-ing community has changed dramatically into a diverse, multi-cultural community, ranging from elderly people to younger immigrants mainly from East Africa, as well as younger families (of which many are coloured and in the middle income group) as properties are more affordable here.

Since 2016 our Church of the Cross congregation started to reach out to the surrounding community with the vision of becoming a community church. We have introduced an English service every Sunday, and a second service alternating between German and Afrikaans. Although our congregation and church committee are dedicated to achieve our dream of a truly community church, it is not easy to successfully reach out and invite people to our services. From this background we are looking for a pastor who will walk with us and can lead the congregation on our new journey, so that we can again be a church for our people in the surrounding community.

The successful candidate will need excellent communication skills, the ability to make contact with people of other cultural backgrounds and the ability to manage diversity, stress and conflict and to resolve differences in a conciliatory manner is highly desirable. The salary will be based on the guidelines for the remuneration of pastors as laid down by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa (Cape Church). The use of a motor vehicle (for business purposes) and accommodation will be available for the incumbent.
