The Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (Cape Church) meeting in Stellenbosch from the 1 – 3 September 2017 addresses you as head of state of the country in which we live and proclaim Jesus Christ as only Lord and Saviour.
We greet you with deep concern about the people of this country, especially those that are suffering under severe poverty, which is made worse by the frequent lack of competence, interest and concern on the part of those in authority on all levels of government and the apparent absence of any political will of the ruling party to address the needs of the people that voted them into power.
As president of our beloved country your task is to be the first servant of the nation and as Christians, who are accountable to God for all our words and deeds, we remind you of this highest responsibility of your office and hold you accountable to it.
We assure you that as a Christian Church whose members are responsible citizens of the Republic of South Africa we will continue to pray for our government, pleading with God to grant us good and responsible leaders, who take their duty to be servants of all the people with absolute seriousness and to grant us the courage to stand with the suffering people of our land in word and deed.
