After our previous elections, South Africa\u2019s political structure saw significant changes. I\u2019m not well-versed in politics, but from what I\u2019ve heard, this is good. For us as a church, we might not feel that we have too much of a role to play after casting our votes, but Paul would disagree.<\/p>\n

In Romans 13, Paul discusses the Christian\u2019s role in society concerning politics, and his view might have shocked some people. Many early Christians, especially those from a Jewish background, lived with an expectation of military liberation from Roman authority. Jesus, the Messiah, the King of the Jews, would come to free them, and Jerusalem would be His capital. But this is not the gospel Jesus proclaimed. Paul, wanting to convey the message of the gospel and not one of revolution and violence, writes that Christians should be subject to governing authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Jesus Himself provided clear guidance on how we should relate to earthly authorities. When asked about paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus responded, \u201cGive back to Caesar what is Caesar\u2019s, and to God what is God\u2019s\u201d (Mark 12:17). This teaching underscores the importance of fulfilling our civic duties while maintaining our devotion to God.<\/p>\n

Another example is Jesus\u2019 interaction with the Roman centurion in Matthew 8:5-13. The centurion, a Roman officer, approached Jesus with faith, asking for healing for his servant. Jesus not only healed the servant but also praised the centurion\u2019s faith, saying, \u201cTruly I tell you; I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.\u201d This encounter shows that Jesus acknowledged and respected the roles of individuals within the Roman authority while highlighting the importance of faith and compassion.<\/p>\n

Many people today don’t think they make much of a difference when it comes to politics. Apart from making your mark at the election, you might feel insignificant, but that’s not true. By striving to follow the examples of Jesus and the words of Paul, we do play a significant role in society. It doesn’t start with a big movement changing the course of the country but with our deeds of Christian love, grace, and fellowship.<\/p>\n

Take time to pray for our country and her leaders, asking God to grant them the wisdom and insight they need to lead with justice and compassion. Pray for our churches to be the visible body of Christ, holding ourselves and others to accountability in love. And pray for God to open your eyes and heart to where you can make a difference, no matter how small it may seem. Remember, every act of kindness, every prayer, and every effort to live out our faith contributes to a greater good. Together, with God’s guidance, we can build a community that reflects His kingdom on earth.<\/p>\n
